Are Disability Recipients Freeloaders?

Too many people have an impression of Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients as freeloaders. And despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the myth persists in American culture: SSDI recipients are freeloaders who are just trying to get something for nothing – scam the system.

That is not true.

In fact, it could not be farther from the truth. SSDI is a program rife with pitfalls and hurdles – points at which individuals pursuing their claims will be denied. For many, without the assistance of a skilled and experienced social security attorney, it is nearly impossible for them to succeed in accessing their benefits.

It’s a stingy, hard-to-access program that helps some of the country’s most desperate citizens scrape by; applying takes months or years, and more than 60 percent of applicants wind up being rejected anyway,? wrote Dylan Matthews for Vox.

Many of those who believe that SSDI recipients are freeloaders would be surprised to learn who actually receives assistance. When faced with a disabling injury and still too young to retire, many individual have nowhere else to look for assistance.

Social Security Disability is an important and vital support for many Americans, said Tom Ueberschaer, a Pensacola social security disability attorney.

Social Security Disability Insurance is not a welfare system and the individuals with legitimate claims who make use of the program and not freeloaders. It is an insurance policy that everyone pays into and if individuals have not paid into it, they cannot receive benefits through SSDI. And individuals who make use of the program are not freeloaders.

This has not stopped lawmakers from treating SSDI recipients as though they are freeloaders, though.

Over half of the people on disability are either anxious or their back hurts, said Senator Rand Paul (R-KY).

A complicated system of applications and process, built to prevent people from successfully obtaining the support they are entitled to, stands between eligible SSDI recipients and the programs that are supposed to be there to protect them.
